I call on the Government to:1) Cancel plans for the new mega-prison at Waikeria;This can be done if the Government takes immediate action to cut the prison population.Therefore, I ask the Government to consider:

2) Reversing the effects of the Bail Amendment Act 2013 which led to an extra 1,500 prisoners held on remand;

3) Change sentencing laws to allow up to another 1,500 prisoners to be automatically eligible for early release instead of going to the Parole Board.

Having saved $1 billion-plus by cancelling the new prison, I call on the government to use the savings to:

4) Improve the quality of life of all New Zealanders and implement long-term strategies to reduce the number of New Zealanders going to prison in the first place (such as rolling out drug courts nationwide).

Don't Build the New Waikeria Prison (Email Petition to Ministers)

I CALL ON THE GOVERNMENT TO:
1) Cancel plans for the new mega-prison at Waikeria.
This can be done if the Government takes immediate action to cut the prison population. Therefore, I ask the Government to consider:
2) Reversing the effects of the Bail Amendment Act 2013 which led to an extra 1,500 prisoners held on remand;
3) Changing sentencing laws to allow up to another 1,500 prisoners to be automatically eligible for early release instead of having to go before the Parole Board.
These changes will allow the Government to cancel plans for the new prison and save over $1 billion of taxpayers’ funds in the process. I call on the Government to reallocate this funding to:
4) Improve the quality of life of all New Zealanders and implement long-term strategies to reduce the number of New Zealanders going to prison in the first place.
